1. Acceptance of these terms
By downloading, installing, or using Aventurine ("the app"), or by using this website, you agree to these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, please do not use Aventurine. Your privacy is covered separately in our Privacy Policy.
2. What Aventurine is
Aventurine is a local-first, offline desktop personal-finance application. It runs entirely on your own device, with no servers, no accounts, and no cloud sync. You are responsible for the device you run it on and for keeping your own backups of your data.
3. License to use the software
Free software, GPL v3
Aventurine is free and open source software, released under the GNU General Public License, version 3. You may run, study, modify, and redistribute it under the terms of that license, which accompanies the source code and prevails over these terms with respect to the software itself. There is no separate license to buy and no feature held back.
Earlier paid licenses
Aventurine was previously sold as a one-time purchase, alongside a free demo tier. Those tiers no longer exist. The licensing system has been removed from the app, so a license key from an earlier purchase is no longer needed and no longer has any effect. Nothing you bought has been taken away: every feature that was paid for is now open to everyone.
Earlier beta builds
Aventurine's public beta has ended. A beta build you downloaded while the beta was running stays licensed to you for your own use at no cost, with the features it shipped with. Beta builds are no longer updated or supported, and the "no warranty" and "limitation of liability" sections below apply to them in full.
4. Payments & donations
- Aventurine costs nothing. There is no purchase, no account, and no payment details to hand over.
- Donations are voluntary. A donation supports the project's ongoing work; it does not buy the software, a feature, a support commitment, or any right you do not already have under the GPL v3.
- Donations are handled by third-party platforms, each acting under its own terms for billing, tax, and payment methods. Recurring donations are cancelled through the platform you set them up on.
- If you donated by mistake, email support@aventurine-app.com and we will sort it out with you in good faith, subject to what the platform allows.
- Earlier purchases. Aventurine was sold before it became free software. If you have a question about a past purchase, contact us and we will work with you in good faith, consistent with the terms presented at checkout and applicable consumer-protection law.
5. Your data is yours
Aventurine stores your information in a local database file on your device. We do not host, receive, or have access to your financial data, and we cannot recover it for you. You are solely responsible for backing up your database file and for safeguarding any passphrase you use to encrypt it. If you lose an encryption passphrase, your data cannot be recovered by anyone, including us.
6. Acceptable use
You agree not to use Aventurine or this website to:
- break any applicable law or infringe anyone's rights;
- attempt to disrupt, attack, or gain unauthorized access to the website or the infrastructure behind it; or
- redistribute or modify the software in violation of the GPL v3, including by stripping its license or copyright notices.
7. Not financial advice
Aventurine is a tool for organizing and visualizing your own financial information. It does not provide financial, investment, tax, accounting, or legal advice, and nothing it displays should be relied on as such. Figures, predictions, and summaries the app generates are informational only. Verify anything important before acting on it, and consult a qualified professional where appropriate.
8. No warranty
Aventurine and this website are provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including but not limited to merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the software will be error-free, uninterrupted, or that it will meet your requirements.
9. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Aventurine and its creators will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profits, or financial outcomes, arising from your use of (or inability to use) the app or this website. To the extent any liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid for the software, if any. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
10. Third-party services
The website relies on third parties, including our web host, GitHub (source code and issue tracker), and the platforms that handle donations. Your use of those services is also subject to their own terms and policies. We are not responsible for third-party services or their content.
11. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. When we do, we'll revise the date at the top of this page. Continuing to use Aventurine or this website after a change means you accept the updated terms.
